Nationality document return service

This service allows you to keep hold of your documents whilst your application is being processed. If you want to apply for British citizenship through this service, you must apply online (you will not be able to use the paper form). If you want to make a joint citizenship and passport application, you must also use this online service. You will need to attend an appointment with them within 10 working days of submitting your online application. You may want to check availability before you submit your application.

Nationality checking service

If you plan to apply for British citizenship through the nationality checking service, you must use the paper form.

If you do not live in the UK

You cannot apply online. You should download and complete the paper form. (This includes people who live in the Channel Islands, on the Isle of Man or in a British Overseas Territory).

How long it takes you to complete the application will depend on your situation. You will be able to save your application and come back to it at another time if you need to.

If you are inactive for 25 minutes you will be automatically logged out.

Form AN is the Application for naturalisation as a British Citizen. You will fill out the application according to your specific eligibility. You will be required to provide such information as: biographical data; proof of residency requirement; and employment information. If you are an EEA national, Swiss national, or the child, spouse, or civil partner of a UK citizen, you will need to provide evidence of this relationship.

1.This is the only official government service for booking the Life in the UK Test. You need to take the test as part of your application for British citizenship or settlement in the UK. You must book your Life in the UK Test online at least 3 days in advance. It costs £50.
